I found this blog through somebody I know online, and I had to share it! The message is so upbeat and positive. So, I present to you... Operation Beautiful!
http://operationbeautiful.com/
The idea is to post anonymous post-it notes in public places for other people to find. Imagine how amazing it would be to randomly find this note saying you are beautiful... It is such a simple idea, but it is so effective. If nothing else, hopefully it will raise a smile.
I am very tempted to make some post-it notes of my own. So if anybody reading this happens to live near me, do keep your eyes open!
What an awesome idea! I love it! It's almost like that one blog where you post a secret about yourself while remaining anonymous. It's a great idea to do things like this because there are people out there that think so highly about what others think that if they find something like this, they can perhaps think that they aren't as bad as they feel themselves to be. I am definitely going to try it!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing this :3

I like the idea of a random stranger seeing it. Although I might try and make it so one of my friends "accidentally" finds one! Hopefully they will appreciate it :)
DeleteI'm glad that you're thinking about ladies' feelings about their own bodies! I wonder, is there a way to do this note-project such that people who do enjoy wearing makeup, modifying their bodies, etc. aren't made to feel ashamed by this kind of note? After all, as written, this note feels a bit like it's attacking women (or men, though it's not explicitly mentioned) that do enjoy heavy makeup, modification, surgery, etc. By supporting "natural" beauty by making proponents of what it thinks of as "unnatural" beauty feel bad, this note is doing the same thing it is attacking its opponents for: celebration via shaming someone else. I teach at a university and often see these kind of post-its in bathrooms. If they seem to me to be doing something like "slut-shaming" or singling out a specific demographic as the ones who "sold out to mass media," as this one sort of does, I take them down. This protects both my students, who are particularly vulnerable to this kind of criticism, and myself, since I wear a lot of makeup and have body modifications.
ReplyDeleteIf you take up this project, I hope you consider this issue and are able to participate in a way that is supportive without negative comparisons. Thanks, and good luck.
Yeah, as somebody who very rarely leaves the house without at least some make-up on, I do agree with your point. Some people use make-up as a mask, but others see it as a way of expressing themselves and have fun with it. There is nothing wrong with wearing make-up! I would definitely word the notes differently so nobody would feel excluded.
